How does
Case by Case Training
Standout?

Most of you are familiar with the obedience classes that are frequently offered where you go to a group class and work on commands such as sit, heel, stay, down, come, etc. These commands are practiced for about an hour and then you go home and practice. There are other training methods you may be familiar with such as Karen Pryor’s Clicker training or police dog training. In many training methods there is negative reinforcement with corrections applied through yanking the leash or firm tones or ignoring the dog.

Many of these methods have been around for decades and although it can be great for some dogs, as with people, there are exceptions. How do you choose the type of training to do with your dog? I offer something a bit different. It is called target-touch training. It is fun for you and your dog. The outcome of the training can be seen at varying times related to how you and your dog work together and how much time you dedicate to it, the same as with any training. There are no corrections to your dog; it is a training based on creating a respectful working relationship that is based on trust. The training begins with establishing respect and trust between you and your dog. This is accomplished through a series of steps. You start by guiding your dog to targets with your hands and having the dog touch a target. Once your dog is willing to touch the target, you begin to advance to a variety of obstacles. These could include equipment such as Fit Paws or natural elements that you might find on a hike such as a downed tree or a rock. The possibilities are endless.

You and your dog will be finding items to balance on or climb. This is stimulating and fun for both you and your dog. All the work is completed on a 6 foot leash. Once you have worked with your dog and established trust and respect, then you move into the typically known commands seen in the more familiar classes.
